  • Can Brave Foundation help me find assistance?

Yes. Often help is around the corner, although we just don’t know it.  Brave Foundation aims to make sure you know where you can find help. We know how important it is for a teenager in this situation to find resources available to her at the beginning of her pregnancy so she can continue her education whilst equipping her towards a happy, healthy family unit over time as a mother.

  • Can you give me an example of how the Brave Foundation directory works?

You may be a 16 year old making an enquiry from Bendigo Victoria, you can search our database and locate a service / educational provider close to where you live. In Bendigo there is the Gianna Centre.

  • What if there are no services/educational providers in my area on the database?

You can contact us with your location and we will email you back with the details of a service/educational provider near you. Please allow 3-5 working days for this service.

  • Can family members/friends contact Brave Foundation?

Yes, we often have emails from Fathers, Mothers, Uncles, Aunts and friends coming through, with the aim to help expecting and parenting teens to a great future.

  • Is it important for expecting and parenting teens to finish their secondary education?

Evidence has shown that if a young woman in this situation continues with her education in some capacity, she will have a better outcome than her counterpart (traditional secondary student).

We understand at Brave Foundation that pregnancy and becoming a parent takes much time and learning. Every new mum needs maternity leave for a period of time but after this time, we do encourage new mothers to continue their education at a part time capacity, even if it might be as little as one subject each week. We encourage school attendance during pregnancy, under a doctor’s recommendation.

  • What is Brave Foundations view on the Choice debate?

Brave Foundation is independent of the choice debate and does not enter into this matter. Brave Foundation firmly believes that this is a choice for the young pregnant woman alongside her trusted loved ones. If she does choose to continue with her pregnancy, Brave Foundation will provide support and guidance for her and her village of support, to assist them towards a journey of understanding, support, education opportunities and a great future.

Brave Foundation supports a coordinated national approach to:

    • Improve outcomes and support for expecting and parenting young people
    • Reduce teenage pregnancy and the teenage birth-rate
    • Change societal attitudes to the stigma attached to teenage pregnancy

In order to achieve the above, Brave Foundation believes the following strategies should be implemented:

    • School and community based comprehensive sexuality education and youth development programs
    • State level co-ordination of youth sexual health
    • Resources and technical support for program development
    • Research, evaluation and enforcement of education packages.

  • Teenage Lives as a Priority

The numbers of teenagers falling pregnant has been declining over the past 20 years, however, the reality is that in 2012 almost 12,000 births were recorded for women aged 19 & under (16.1 live births per 1000). Whilst this figure is less than the UK (19.9 per 1,000) and the USA (29.4 per 1,000) it’s much higher that other advanced economies in Europe and Asia. In France and Japan the rate was 6 per thousand; in Denmark, 5 per thousand and in the Netherlands, less than 5 per thousand.

Brave Foundation believes that every teenager in Australia deserves the gift of a teenage life first and foremost. However, if a teenage pregnancy does happen, these young women and their families need to know that there is a way forward to find support and educational opportunities that will enhance health and well-being for the expecting mother and their baby.

Statistics show that pregnancy rates are higher among teenagers whose lives include:

    • Low socioeconomic background
    • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status
    • Family situations with regular conflict; family violence or sexual abuse during childhood
    • Unstable housing arrangements/ living in out of home care
    • Poor school performance and attendance
    • Family history of pregnancies at a young age
    • Low self esteem
    • Living in rural and remote areas
    • Having a mental health diagnosis

Statistics also show that there are significantly higher birth rates for teenagers living in remote areas. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women, especially those in remote communities, have the highest rate of teenage births in Australia. In 2007, 4% of all babies in Australia were born to teenage mothers, while 19% of all Indigenous babies in Australia were born to teenage mothers.

It is reflected statistically, and Brave Foundation supports this view, that when an expecting teen engages with support and education, the generational risk of teenage pregnancy is reduced dramatically.

It is the intention and purpose of Brave Foundation to provide the support and education to teenagers prior to teenage pregnancy. However, if an unplanned pregnancy does occur Brave Foundation is there for support and guidance.
