Resources for Professionals

Brave Foundation works alongside school and health professionals, to help expecting and parenting teens realise and achieve their goals.

School Professionals

Please review the contents of this website to assist your pregnant or parenting secondary student. Much research has shown that, by engaging expecting/parenting teens in education, their future and that of their child’s is changed dramatically. Please see our research page which links to this research.

We have worked with hundreds of secondary schools since 2009, and this website and its content have been developed in response to those relationships. It is Brave Foundation’s mission to equip and support your secondary school and its professionals as well as the teen in the event of teenage pregnancy. Together we can be the first point of access to equip and inspire expecting teens, and to instil courage and confidence with support and education pathways.

On this website you will find ways that your school can assist the expecting or parenting teen, and you can request these resources by contacting us.

Next Steps

  • Read the section ‘Throughout pregnancy – what to expect’. This will bring you to an interactive pregnancy journey which also prepares a pathway for the expecting teenager in considering her education continuum. This is most successful if visited by the student and teacher together, to help work towards an educational plan for the student and her promises for the future whilst allowing for the demands of maternity leave and becoming a parent.
  • Order a copy of Brave Little Bear: The inspirational story of a teenage mother by Bernadette Black (Founding Director of Brave Foundation and Barnardos Australian Mother of the Year). Please read this and use it as a resource to inspire the pregnant teen towards a great future. An idea for teachers is to encourage your student to write their three promises on the inside cover of each book.
  • Download and adopt the National Policy Standard for Secondary Schools. Your secondary school can use this standard as a policy guide to assist the expecting or parenting student. This also addresses questions that your school will need to consider.
  • Print your downloadable a3-brave-promo-poster Brave Foundation Poster, which markets our website www.bravefoundation.org.au and will help you in finding out how to support and inspire the expecting teen to access support and continue their education within their community. Please familiarise yourself with the site and place this poster in a prominent site within your school. Online, will see a national interactive database of services. You can help Brave Foundation by adding young parent groups, pregnancy services or education facilities available in your community for the expecting and parenting teen. Filling in the online form for additional support and educational services can do this. Your help in growing this essential database is greatly appreciated.
  • Be informed about our scholarship opportunities for expecting and parenting students in Australia
