At Brave Foundation we believe it is necessary to research the best standard of care and outreach extended to expecting and parenting teens and their families. This is a high value for our organisation as we endeavour to see that such standards are transitioned into Australia.
We believe that if expecting and parenting teens have access to support, they have the opportunity of being in a happy, healthy, skilled family with healthy children over time.
Currently, we also believe there are gaps in the system and, due to these, this outcome is sometimes not achieved. We have recognised three areas of research, which will support our desired outcome:
Brave Foundation will:
Brave Foundation believes that every teenager in Australia deserves the gift of a teenage life first and foremost. However, if a teenage pregnancy does happen, these young women and their families need to know that there is a way forward to find support and educational opportunities that will enhance health and well-being for the expecting teen and their baby.
Statistics show that pregnancy rates are higher among teenagers whose lives include:
Statistics also show that there are significantly higher birth rates for teenagers living in remote areas. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women, especially those in remote communities, have the highest rate of teenage births in Australia. In 2007, 4% of all babies in Australia were born to teenage mothers, while 19% of all Indigenous babies in Australia were born to teenage mothers.
It is reflected statistically, and Brave Foundation supports this view, that when an expecting teen engages with support and education, the generational risk of teenage pregnancy is reduced dramatically.
It is the intention and purpose of Brave Foundation to provide the support and education to teenagers prior to teenage pregnancy. Brave Foundation exists to support expecting and parenting teens after the fact.
Brave Foundation is independent of the choice debate and does not enter into this matter. Brave Foundation firmly believes that this is a choice for the young pregnant woman alongside her trusted loved ones and support people. If she does choose to continue with her pregnancy, Brave Foundation will provide support and guidance for her and her village of support, to assist them towards a journey of understanding, support, education opportunities and a great future. There are over 180 providers listed on the Brave Foundation directory, these services provide programs or services that provide support and/or opportunities to access secondary schooling education, nationally for the expecting or parenting teen.
Brave Foundation supports a coordinated national approach to:
There are over 180 providers listed on the Brave Foundation national directory. To be a part of the registry these services must demonstrate that they provide specific support or education programs for the expecting or parenting teen (and/ or their families), e.g.; a young parenting group, young parents playgroup, counselling service, flexible year 11/12 schooling program etc. Your organisation must provide an outreach service to assist expecting and parenting teens to be included in the directory. Brave Foundation is independent of the choice debate and does not comment on this matter, it exists to support expecting and parenting teens after the fact.
